The recent Revolut outage interrupted cryptocurrency services, card payments and bank transfers after a technical incident at Google Cloud affected its London infrastructure. The British fintech company reassured customers that their funds and personal information remained secure, although the disruption raised concerns about the reliability of centralized financial platforms.
The incident started at 06:08 UTC when Google Cloud’s London-based europe-west2 region experienced technical difficulties. Revolut subsequently identified 27 services as partially unavailable or affected, including cryptocurrency access. Other financial institutions and public services relying on the same cloud infrastructure also experienced interruptions.
Revolut said it was working to restore normal operations as the situation developed. By 17:00 UTC, some functions had resumed, but Reuters reported that most services listed on Revolut’s UK status page continued to show problems. The company later confirmed that the affected services had been restored.
Revolut Outage Highlights a Vulnerability in Crypto Access
The disruption underscores an important distinction for cryptocurrency users: owning digital assets does not necessarily guarantee uninterrupted access to them.
Revolut provides cryptocurrency trading through its centralized platform, meaning customers rely on the company’s systems to check balances, monitor holdings and place orders. When those systems become unavailable, users may temporarily lose access to the tools required to manage their investments.
However, an inaccessible trading platform does not mean the underlying cryptocurrency has disappeared. Revolut explicitly confirmed that customers’ funds and data remained safe throughout the disruption. No verified evidence indicated that the outage caused cryptocurrency theft or missing customer balances.
Even short-lived interruptions can create challenges during volatile market conditions. Customers unable to access their trading accounts may miss opportunities to buy or sell assets or adjust existing positions. However, whether Revolut’s cryptocurrency users experienced such consequences during this incident has not been independently established.
The outage also highlights the infrastructure risks associated with centralized financial applications. A technical problem affecting Google Cloud’s London region disrupted multiple organizations, demonstrating how services operated by separate companies can depend on the same underlying technology provider.
Google Cloud said its engineering team was investigating the incident and planned to publish a detailed analysis after completing its review. The company’s official updates provide a primary source of information about the infrastructure disruption.
Centralized Cryptocurrency Platforms Face Access Challenges
The Revolut incident serves as a reminder that cryptocurrency accessibility depends on more than the availability of blockchain networks. A blockchain may continue processing transactions while a centralized exchange or financial application experiences downtime. Customers relying on an intermediary may remain unable to access their trading interface even when the underlying network continues to operate normally.
Self-custody can reduce dependence on a single company’s account systems, but it introduces other responsibilities. Users must safeguard their private keys, verify transactions carefully and understand network fees. Holding assets in a personal wallet also does not eliminate every dependency on external infrastructure.
For Revolut customers, the immediate concern was service availability rather than any confirmed loss of funds. The company maintained that customer money and data remained secure, while subsequent reports indicated that the affected services had been restored.
The incident also comes as regulators increase their scrutiny of technology providers supporting financial services. Reuters reported that UK authorities designated Google Cloud EMEA Limited as a critical third-party supplier to the financial sector in July 2026. European Union regulators have also identified major technology companies as critical dependencies for financial institutions.
The implications extend beyond Revolut. As banking, payment processing and cryptocurrency services increasingly rely on shared cloud infrastructure, a single technical failure can disrupt several financial products at the same time.
For cryptocurrency users, the practical lesson is to monitor official platform updates during outages, avoid assuming that inaccessible balances have been lost, and understand how custody arrangements influence access to digital assets.
The Revolut outage did not establish that customer funds were stolen or that blockchain networks had failed. Instead, it exposed a specific weakness in the digital asset ecosystem: access to cryptocurrency can depend on centralized infrastructure that users do not control.
