A recent Revolut outage disrupted cryptocurrency services, card payments and bank transfers after technical problems at Google Cloud affected its London infrastructure. The British fintech company assured customers that their funds and personal data remained secure, but the incident raised concerns about the reliability of centralized financial platforms.
The disruption began at 06:08 UTC when Google Cloud’s London-based europe-west2 region experienced technical difficulties. Revolut subsequently reported that 27 services were partially unavailable or affected, including access to cryptocurrency features. Other financial institutions and public services relying on the same cloud infrastructure also experienced disruptions.
Revolut said it was working to restore normal operations as the incident developed. By 17:00 UTC, some functions had resumed, although Reuters reported that most services listed on Revolut’s UK status page continued to show problems. The company later confirmed that the affected services had been restored.
Revolut Outage Highlights a Potential Weakness in Crypto Access
The incident underscores an important distinction for cryptocurrency users: owning digital assets and being able to access them are not necessarily the same thing.
Revolut provides cryptocurrency trading through a centralized platform, meaning customers rely on the company’s infrastructure to check balances and execute trades. If those systems become unavailable, users may temporarily lose access to the tools they need to manage their holdings.
However, an inaccessible trading interface does not mean the underlying cryptocurrency has disappeared. Revolut explicitly stated that customer funds and data remained safe throughout the disruption. No verified evidence established that the incident resulted in stolen cryptocurrency or missing customer balances.
Even temporary service interruptions can have consequences during periods of market volatility. Customers unable to access a trading platform may miss opportunities to buy, sell or adjust their positions. Whether Revolut users experienced such losses during this particular incident has not been independently confirmed.
The outage also highlights the infrastructure vulnerabilities associated with centralized financial applications. A technical failure in Google Cloud’s London region affected multiple organizations, illustrating how seemingly independent services can rely on the same underlying technology provider.
Google Cloud said its engineering team was investigating the problem and would release a detailed analysis after completing its review. The company’s official updates provide a primary source for information about the infrastructure disruption.
Centralized Crypto Platforms Face Availability Risks
The Revolut incident demonstrates that cryptocurrency access depends on more than the availability of blockchain networks. A blockchain can continue processing transactions even when a centralized exchange or financial application is experiencing downtime. Customers relying on an intermediary may still be unable to interact with their assets through that platform.
Self-custody offers an alternative by reducing dependence on a single company’s account infrastructure. However, it introduces other responsibilities, including protecting private keys, verifying transaction details and managing network fees. Moving assets into a self-custody wallet also does not eliminate every potential infrastructure dependency.
For Revolut customers, the immediate problem involved service availability rather than any confirmed loss of funds. The company maintained that customer money and data were safe, and subsequent reporting indicated that the affected services had been restored.
The incident also comes amid increased regulatory scrutiny of the technology companies supporting financial services. Reuters reported that UK authorities designated Google Cloud EMEA Limited as a critical third-party supplier to the financial sector in July 2026. European Union regulators have similarly identified major technology providers as critical dependencies for financial institutions.
These developments demonstrate why the outage matters beyond Revolut itself. As banking, payment processing and cryptocurrency services increasingly depend on shared cloud infrastructure, a technical failure at one provider can interrupt multiple financial services simultaneously.
For cryptocurrency users, the practical lessons are clear: monitor official platform updates during disruptions, do not assume that inaccessible balances have been lost, and understand how custody arrangements affect access to digital assets.
The Revolut outage did not establish that customer funds had been stolen or that underlying blockchain networks had failed. Instead, it exposed a more specific vulnerability: access to digital assets can depend on centralized infrastructure that users neither own nor control.
