Dogecoin Labs will bring together MyDoge, DogeOS and merchant payment services as developers seek to expand DOGE’s practical applications and encourage holders to spend their tokens on products and services.
The teams behind a Dogecoin wallet, an application platform and merchant payment tools are joining forces to establish Dogecoin Labs, aiming to create more opportunities for users to spend and utilize DOGE.
Formed in collaboration with the Dogecoin Foundation, Dogecoin Labs will manage and operate MyDoge, DogeOS and Such App, according to an announcement shared with CoinDesk. Jordan Jefferson, who founded MyDoge and DogeOS, will serve as the company’s chief executive officer.
The initiative brings together three components of a potential Dogecoin ecosystem. Developers can create applications through DogeOS, users can discover those applications through MyDoge, and merchants can accept payments using Such App. The payment platform’s beta version already supports invoices and in-person QR code payments, while integration with DogeOS remains in development plans.
Launched in 2013 as a joke cryptocurrency featuring a Shiba Inu dog, Dogecoin has since become one of the longest-running digital assets. DOGE has gained 3.9% over the past 24 hours and was recently trading at approximately $0.082.
MyDoge reported more than 500,000 users, saying it achieved that milestone without paid user acquisition. Its recently launched V3 update connects the wallet with applications under development on DogeOS. However, the announcement did not disclose how many users are active or how many have interacted with those applications.
The Dogecoin Foundation and its commercial arm, House of Doge, are contributing intellectual property and development teams to the new venture. The foundation will continue supporting open-source development, advocacy and community initiatives, while Dogecoin Labs focuses on commercial products and business opportunities.
DogeOS launched its public testnet on September 30, giving developers a platform to experiment with Ethereum-style lending services, exchanges and games using test DOGE. Because the Dogecoin blockchain primarily processes transfers of its native token, these applications operate on a separate system.
However, three weeks after the testnet launch, DogeOS’s public user guide continued to list its featured applications as “coming soon.”
The planned security connection between DogeOS and the Dogecoin blockchain also remains incomplete. The project aims to enable Dogecoin’s native network to verify mathematical proofs demonstrating that applications executed correctly. The proposed protocol change needed to support this functionality is still in draft form.
Until that connection is implemented, users must depend on selected DogeOS operators and hardware to verify the applications’ execution.
