Ethereum Leads Crypto Market Rebound With 18% Surge

  • Ethereum climbed 17.51% to finish at $2,253.35, while Coinbase data pointed to a significant rise in trading activity alongside a wide and volatile price range.
  • Traders began the day focused on a single question: why is crypto up today? Ethereum opened around $2,260 after gaining nearly 18% over the previous 24 hours.
  • According to CoinGecko, ETH was trading near $1,930 yesterday before a sudden surge sent it to a session high of $2,325. The move triggered more than $3 billion in liquidations, making it the eighth-largest liquidation event on record, though still far below the $19 billion wiped out in October 2025 after Trump threatened 100% tariffs on China.
  • CoinGecko data showed Ethereum up 18.8% over 24 hours, with trading volume reaching $31.9 billion, a 415.05% jump. Its market capitalization stood at $272.8 billion.
  • The broader crypto market also rallied 7.5% overnight, lifting total market capitalization to $2.45 trillion and positioning Ethereum among the strongest performers of the latest 24-hour surge.

Why Is Crypto Up Today? Trump Says US Will Stay the ‘Undisputed Leader’ in Bitcoin and Crypto

  • President Donald Trump met yesterday with executives from companies including Coinbase Global Inc., Payward Inc., and Blockchain.com Group Holdings Inc.
  • The Trump administration has been pushing to expand the crypto and prediction-market industries through a more favorable regulatory environment.
  • The meeting came shortly after the SEC proposed exemptions for certain digital asset offerings from securities registration requirements, as the agency advances its crypto agenda following the failure of major legislation in Congress.
  • The SEC said the proposed exemptions are intended to support companies during their startup and fundraising phases. Bitcoin posted its biggest gain since March 4, recently reaching $68,476, its highest level since June 1.
  • After the meeting, Trump told reporters that the US would make sure it remained the “undisputed leader” in Bitcoin, crypto, prediction markets and artificial intelligence.
  • Trump also said the US intends to purchase “sizable” amounts of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, triggering a wave of buying that pushed Ethereum above $2,000 and Bitcoin toward $69,900.
  • The president’s comments appear to have been a key catalyst behind the rally, providing a clear explanation for the sharp crypto gains traders have been questioning over the past 24 hours.

Ethereum Price Forecast: Assessing the Break Above $2,000

  • Ethereum closed above $2,000 on Aug. 19 after opening around the same level. Historical price data show that ETH had largely remained below $2,000 during the previous month, with daily closes between $1,844.98 and $1,954.71 from July 19 through Aug. 18.
  • The breakout has renewed speculation about Ethereum eventually reaching $3,000, although the available market data do not confirm a specific price target. Instead, they point to a sharp one-day rally, a substantial increase in trading volume and a close that remained below $3,000.
  • Coinbase data showed 27,568 Ethereum trades over the previous 24 hours, including 16,951 buys and 12,069 sells. The platform’s buyer-ratio indicator showed buyers accounting for 61% of activity.
  • Search interest for Ethereum reached 8,396 queries, while ETH ranked as the second-most popular digital asset on Coinbase.
  • Coinbase reported Ethereum market dominance of 11.75%, with a circulating supply of 121 million ETH and no maximum supply. The platform also recorded $136.38 billion in seven-day trading volume and $238.23 billion over the past 30 days.
