Sony has introduced a new incubation initiative through Soneium to support blockchain-based entertainment projects, including PlayStation games, anime, and digital collectibles. The program could create fresh opportunities for onchain gaming and fan engagement, although the company has not confirmed any direct cryptocurrency integration with PlayStation.
The Sony Onchain Entertainment Incubation Program began accepting applications on October 29, with submissions open through December 2026. The initiative encourages startups and creators to build entertainment-focused products on Soneium, Sony’s blockchain network.
Selected participants may receive technical resources, marketing assistance, business development guidance, community-building support, and consideration for potential investment. Sony said its goal is to help projects progress beyond technical demonstrations and develop entertainment products that offer practical benefits to users.
Sony’s Soneium Program Focuses on Gaming, Anime, and Digital Collectibles
Sony’s latest initiative covers a broad range of entertainment sectors rather than concentrating exclusively on blockchain gaming. Eligible categories include console, PC, and mobile games, along with anime, manga, music, films, esports, immersive experiences, and creator communities.
The company is also interested in projects that use blockchain technology to reshape how audiences engage with entertainment intellectual property. Possible applications include digital collectibles, fan-focused communities, merchandise, and interactive experiences that allow users to participate more actively in creator-led ecosystems.
Applicants must demonstrate a clear relationship between entertainment, intellectual property, and blockchain technology. Projects are required to integrate with Soneium, although multichain strategies are permitted when the network remains properly incorporated.
Sony has already established a track record of supporting projects through earlier incubation initiatives. In 2024, Soneium Spark selected 32 projects from more than 1,700 applications. The following year, Soneium For All chose 11 projects from over 250 submissions.
The new program builds on those efforts by placing greater emphasis on entertainment applications. Sony is seeking products that bring content, communities, and digital assets together to encourage ongoing user engagement.
PlayStation Crypto Speculation Resurfaces, but Integration Remains Unconfirmed
The announcement has renewed speculation about Sony’s broader blockchain ambitions, particularly its potential relationship with PlayStation. The program explicitly includes PlayStation games among its target categories and invites independent developers and startups to create entertainment products compatible with Soneium.
Anime is another key focus, reflecting the strong connections between entertainment franchises and dedicated fan communities. By including anime and character-based intellectual property, Sony is opening the door for developers to explore blockchain-powered collectibles and alternative fan engagement models.
However, the initiative does not confirm that cryptocurrency features will be introduced directly into PlayStation games. Instead, it provides an opportunity for independent teams to develop entertainment projects using Sony’s blockchain infrastructure.
Applications will be reviewed between November 2026 and March 2027, with selected startups receiving support on a rolling basis. Sony has also clarified that participation does not guarantee funding, as investment decisions will be assessed separately.
For now, the program signals Sony’s intention to expand the Soneium ecosystem by encouraging more entertainment businesses to explore blockchain-based products and experiences.
