Bitcoin faces another significant market test on October 30, when approximately $11 billion in options contracts are set to expire. With the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) having announced its latest interest-rate decision, traders are now watching whether BTC can maintain its current levels as derivatives positions reset. If the market absorbs the Fed’s message without renewed selling pressure, Bitcoin could see a relief rally.
On October 28, the Federal Reserve kept interest rates unchanged at 3.75%–4%, in line with market expectations. However, two officials dissented, favoring a 0.25-percentage-point increase. While the decision removed an immediate source of uncertainty, the Fed’s outlook for future monetary policy remains a key factor for risk assets.
Bitcoin may now shift investors’ attention toward derivatives positioning and market demand. As the options expiry approaches, changes in hedging activity and liquidity could trigger another significant price move.
Bitcoin Price Faces $11B Options Expiry as Calls Outnumber Puts
Approximately $11 billion worth of Bitcoin options contracts are scheduled to expire on Friday, October 30. The large concentration of open interest makes the settlement a potentially important catalyst for short-term volatility.
Derivatives data published ahead of the expiry showed that call options substantially outnumbered put options. One estimate placed the put-to-call ratio near 0.53, indicating that outstanding call contracts were considerably more numerous than puts. Calls generally gain value when prices rise, while puts can help traders hedge against potential declines.
This imbalance may support a bullish interpretation of market positioning, although open interest alone does not reveal the market’s overall direction. Some call positions are part of hedged strategies, and put options can serve purposes beyond outright bearish speculation.
The $78,000 level has also emerged as an important reference point in expiry-related estimates. Often referred to as the maximum pain price, it represents the theoretical level at which aggregate payouts to option holders would be minimized.
However, Bitcoin is not guaranteed to settle near $78,000. Its actual price will depend on buying and selling pressure, market liquidity, and trading activity as the contracts approach expiration.
A more constructive outcome for bulls would involve Bitcoin maintaining key support levels through settlement. If market makers adjust their hedges and expiring positions disappear without triggering substantial selling, BTC could gain room for a sustained recovery.
FOMC Uncertainty Eases, but December Rate Decision Remains Uncertain
The latest FOMC meeting is over, but uncertainty surrounding the Fed’s future policy direction remains. The central bank left interest rates unchanged while describing economic activity as strong and inflation as elevated.
The two dissenting votes in favor of a rate increase complicate the bullish outlook. Their positions suggest that some policymakers remain concerned about inflation and believe tighter monetary policy may still be necessary.
For Bitcoin, the immediate question is whether markets had already priced in the expected rate hold. When the Fed delivers an anticipated decision without a major surprise, investors can turn their attention back to derivatives positioning, liquidity conditions, and upcoming economic data.
That shift could create an opportunity for a relief rally if traders determine that the announcement was less restrictive than feared. On the other hand, expectations of tighter monetary policy later in the year could continue to limit demand for riskier assets.
The next FOMC meeting is scheduled for December 8–9. Before then, inflation releases, employment figures, and public comments from policymakers could significantly alter expectations for the Fed’s next move.
Although the latest decision has removed one immediate source of market uncertainty, the broader monetary-policy outlook remains unresolved. The October 30 options expiry is the next major test, and a relatively stable settlement could give Bitcoin buyers an opportunity to rebuild momentum.
A bullish breakout remains possible, but traders will need confirmation from sustained buying pressure before treating the expiry as a definitive turning point for Bitcoin’s price.
