Crypto Week Ahead: Aug. 24–28
Bitcoin is heading into the final week of August after posting its strongest monthly performance in years. BTC has gained 23% so far this month, putting it on track for its best August since 2017, when it jumped 65%, according to CoinGlass. The median August return is negative 7%.
The rally will now face several major catalysts, including a heavy slate of U.S. economic data on growth and inflation and the Jackson Hole symposium later in the week.
“Bitcoin enters next week with considerable momentum, but also with a much higher bar to clear after its strongest weekly rally in years,” Daniela Hathorn, senior market analyst at Capital.com, told CoinDesk. Markets will pay close attention to Fed Chair Kevin Warsh’s first keynote speech at the event.
Hathorn said a speech that keeps the possibility of additional Fed tightening at bay could support the weaker-dollar and lower-yield environment that has helped drive Bitcoin higher. A more hawkish message, however, could prompt traders to lock in profits.
Hong Yea, co-founder and CEO of onchain investment platform Grvt, told CoinDesk that the week will be defined by the “collision of Jackson Hole with geopolitical risk.” Uncertainty surrounding the U.S.-Iran conflict remains, while Russia’s war in Ukraine continues to carry the risk of a broader escalation.
