Live: Bitcoin Stays Near $64K as Oil and Bond Yields Pressure Risk Assets

Bitcoin remained around $64,000 on Tuesday despite a sharp rise in bond yields and crude prices, which continued to weigh on broader risk appetite. The U.S. 30-year Treasury yield climbed to its highest level since 2007, while Brent crude moved above $91 as tensions surrounding the Iran conflict intensified.

Galaxy Digital research chief Alex Thorn said Tuesday that Bitcoin’s 30-day realized volatility has continued to decline and is approaching historic lows.

He compared the current setup to a compressed spring that could eventually trigger a significant price move.

Metaplanet Plans U.S. Bitcoin Treasury Expansion

Japanese bitcoin treasury firm Metaplanet is expanding into the U.S. market through an investment in Nasdaq-listed Super League.

The company said Tuesday that it plans to contribute 2,100 BTC worth about $132 million, along with $2.5 million in cash, to Super League in exchange for common shares, preferred stock and warrants. The initial transaction is valued at roughly $134.6 million.

The announcement sparked a sharp premarket move in Super League shares, which gained about 120%, despite the company having a market capitalization of only around $4.5 million.

Super League is expected to be renamed Superplanet and will serve as Metaplanet’s U.S. bitcoin treasury platform while continuing its existing gaming media operations. Metaplanet is expected to control approximately 95.7% of the company’s outstanding shares.

The deal is targeted for completion in the fourth quarter, pending shareholder approval and other regulatory and closing conditions.

Metaplanet CEO Simon Gerovich said the transaction will provide the company with a Nasdaq-listed U.S. platform for raising capital and expanding its bitcoin treasury operations across both the American and Japanese markets.

U.S. Housing Starts Drop Sharply in July

U.S. housing starts unexpectedly declined to an annualized rate of 1.239 million in July, representing a 12.4% drop from June’s 1.415 million pace and falling well short of economists’ expectations of 1.35 million.

Building permits, which are generally viewed as a forward-looking measure of construction activity, moved in the opposite direction. Permits increased 5% to 1.443 million, exceeding the 1.37 million consensus estimate.

Although the housing starts data appeared weak, the indicator is known for significant volatility and seasonal adjustments. Additional reports will be needed to determine whether higher borrowing costs are beginning to materially weaken the housing market.

Treasury yields continued moving higher Tuesday, with the 10-year yield increasing 1.4 basis points to 4.738%.

Oil Surges as Strait of Hormuz Tensions Intensify

Brent crude climbed above $91 per barrel, reaching another multi-week high as tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz increased.

President Donald Trump posted a map on Truth Social suggesting that the strategically important waterway could potentially become U.S. territory, following similar comments made the previous day.

Crypto Sentiment Improves but Remains in Fear

The Crypto Fear & Greed Index rose to 41, its highest reading since mid-May, but remained firmly within the fear category.

The index ranges from 0 to 100, with readings below 50 indicating fearful market sentiment. The improvement suggests that investor confidence is beginning to recover, although the move does not yet represent a decisive shift.

A sustained reading above 50 would be needed to signal a more meaningful change in sentiment. Until then, the market remains vulnerable to a rebound that could quickly lose momentum.

Bitcoin’s 200-Week Moving Average Moves Above $64,000

Bitcoin’s 200-week moving average has climbed above $64,000 and now sits around $64,217.

The indicator measures Bitcoin’s average weekly closing price over a 200-week period and is widely followed as a long-term market benchmark. With BTC trading close to the same level, the cryptocurrency is once again testing an indicator that provided significant support during the previous bear market.

Global Bond Yields Put Pressure on Tech Stocks

The global sell-off in longer-dated government bonds continued to pressure technology stocks.

The Invesco QQQ ETF fell more than 1% in premarket trading as the U.S. 30-year Treasury yield jumped another 20 basis points to 5.32%, its highest level in the current cycle.

Long-term yields also climbed in other major markets. The U.K. 30-year gilt yield increased 23 basis points to 5.834% after weaker-than-expected labor data, while Japan’s 30-year government bond yield reached 4.126%, approaching its May peak.

Bitcoin and precious metals also edged lower over the previous 24 hours, although BTC continued to hold near $64,000.

Weekend Crypto Trading Surpasses $2 Billion on CME

More than $2 billion worth of cryptocurrency has been traded on weekends since CME introduced round-the-clock crypto trading on May 29.

CME said market participants ranging from retail traders to institutions are using its regulated platform to manage cryptocurrency exposure continuously.

Velo data shows that Bitcoin has produced an aggregate weekday return of -0.5% over the past three months. Weekends have performed better, with Saturday and Sunday generating combined gains of about 0.51%.

Bitcoin Holds Firm Despite Rising Yields and Oil

Bitcoin was trading around $64,100 on Tuesday, up approximately 1% for the day and remaining above the $64,000 threshold despite deteriorating conditions across broader risk markets.

Ether was hovering near $1,893, while most major cryptocurrencies were little changed. Hyperliquid stood out as the strongest performer among major tokens, gaining about 8.3% for the week.

The main pressure is coming from the bond and energy markets. The U.S. 30-year Treasury yield climbed to 5.33%, its highest level since 2007, as investors demanded higher returns to compensate for government debt and persistent inflation risks.

Long-term borrowing costs have risen globally, while S&P 500 futures declined 0.5%, putting the index on track for a third consecutive losing session.

Brent crude also moved above $91 as the U.S.-Iran conflict intensified. The combination of higher oil prices and rising yields creates a difficult environment for risk assets. More expensive oil can fuel inflation, which can push bond yields higher and reduce expectations for easier monetary policy. Higher financing costs can then encourage investors to reduce exposure to riskier assets such as cryptocurrencies.

Bitcoin, however, has so far shown notable resilience. The cryptocurrency remained positive on the day and was also higher for the week even as stocks faced another decline and long-term yields reached multi-year highs.

That relative strength could indicate that renewed ETF demand is helping absorb some of the macroeconomic pressure. A move above $64,500 would provide stronger evidence that buyers are successfully absorbing the selling pressure.

However, a further surge in oil toward $100 or another sharp increase in Treasury yields could put Bitcoin’s resilience to the test.
