Vitalik Buterin’s Devcon Cosplay Steals Attention as Bitmine Adds Another 8,573 ETH
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin brought an unexpected moment of humor to Devcon 8 after appearing on stage in a green cloak and a smiling mask. His fantasy-inspired outfit quickly became a talking point at the conference, even as Bitmine Immersion Technologies continued expanding its Ethereum treasury with another 8,573 ETH purchase.
Buterin’s unusual appearance looked more like a character from a fantasy adventure than a speaker at one of the cryptocurrency industry’s biggest developer events. The playful moment offered a break from the technical discussions taking place in Mumbai, where Ethereum developers and researchers are examining the network’s future.
Away from the conference spotlight, Bitmine is pursuing an ambitious accumulation strategy, aiming to acquire enough ETH to represent 5% of the cryptocurrency’s total supply.
The company’s latest disclosure showed that it held 6,060,506 ETH as of November 1. At an ETH price of $2,261, the position was valued at approximately $13.7 billion, representing around 4.9% of Ethereum’s circulating supply.
Vitalik’s Devcon Appearance Draws Attention as Bitmine Expands Its ETH Treasury
Devcon 8 is taking place in Mumbai from November 3 to November 6, bringing together Ethereum developers, researchers, and ecosystem participants for presentations, discussions, and workshops.
While the event focuses on Ethereum’s technical development and long-term direction, Buterin’s green cloak and smiling mask provided one of its most unexpected highlights.
The appearance reflected the playful side of Ethereum’s community, even as the ecosystem continues to confront important challenges involving adoption, scalability, and the performance of ETH in financial markets.
Bitmine, meanwhile, has maintained its accumulation strategy despite uncertainty surrounding cryptocurrency prices.
The company acquired another 8,573 ETH during the latest reported week, worth approximately $19.4 million based on its disclosed valuation. Its combined holdings of cryptocurrencies, cash, and other investments reached $14.5 billion.
The portfolio also included 216 BTC and approximately $498 million in cash and marketable securities.
Bitmine has placed a substantial portion of its Ethereum holdings into staking. Its staked balance reached 5.23 million ETH, equivalent to approximately 86% of its total position.
The company estimates that its existing staking holdings could produce around $358 million in annualized rewards. If it eventually stakes its entire Ethereum treasury, that figure could increase to approximately $415 million.
This strategy gives Bitmine two potential sources of value: accumulating ETH for long-term exposure while earning rewards through Ethereum’s proof-of-stake network.
Ethereum Price Prediction: Could ETH Return to $5,000?
Bitmine’s continued purchases are contributing to the broader bullish argument for Ethereum, although its investment strategy is only one factor influencing the asset’s price outlook.
Staking reduces the amount of ETH immediately available for trading, while large treasury purchases can create additional demand. Bitmine’s holdings now account for nearly 5% of Ethereum’s supply, making the company an increasingly significant institutional holder.
Its staking activity also demonstrates how Ethereum’s proof-of-stake mechanism can generate income for long-term holders that help secure the network. The potential rewards may encourage Bitmine to maintain its exposure rather than respond to short-term price fluctuations.
Bitmine Chairman Tom Lee has outlined an optimistic outlook for Ethereum, suggesting that ETH could revisit its previous all-time high of approximately $4,954 before the end of 2026. A move toward $6,000 has also emerged as a potential year-end target.
At the current reference price of $2,261, Ethereum would need to advance approximately 119% to reach $4,954. Reaching $6,000 would require a gain of roughly 165%.
However, the technical outlook still presents challenges. Recent market analysis identified the $2,315 area as an important resistance level associated with a key moving average.
A sustained break above this zone could strengthen expectations for a broader recovery. If ETH fails to reclaim it, the cryptocurrency could remain exposed to further selling pressure.
ETF Outflows and Weak Price Action Remain Key Risks
Despite Bitmine’s aggressive accumulation, Ethereum’s market performance has yet to show a decisive recovery.
US spot Ethereum ETFs experienced significant withdrawals during October, adding pressure to an already weak price environment. This suggests that institutional demand remains uneven, even as some companies continue increasing their direct ETH exposure.
Bitmine’s growing treasury and staking position provide a bullish signal for long-term investors, but they do not guarantee an immediate price reversal.
For Ethereum to approach the $5,000 or $6,000 levels, stronger market demand and an improvement in technical conditions may be necessary.
Buterin’s unusual Devcon appearance may have delivered the conference’s most entertaining moment, while Bitmine’s latest purchase represents a more substantial development for Ethereum’s institutional adoption story.
With its holdings approaching 5% of total ETH supply, Bitmine is continuing to make a significant long-term bet on the network. Whether that conviction translates into a broader price rally will depend on market demand, ETF flows, and ETH’s ability to overcome key resistance levels.
