T. Rowe Price Enters Crypto ETFs With Multi-Token Active Strategy

T. Rowe Price has introduced what it describes as the first actively managed multi-token spot crypto ETF in the industry, providing investors with diversified exposure to digital assets.

The firm’s T. Rowe Price Active Crypto ETF (TKNZ) started trading on Thursday, offering access to a portfolio of cryptocurrencies instead of focusing on a single token. This launch represents a significant step for the Baltimore-based asset manager, which oversees $1.9 trillion in assets, as it expands into the digital asset space.

Unlike the spot bitcoin and ether ETFs that have dominated the market in recent years, TKNZ is structured to hold a broad mix of cryptocurrencies. Its portfolio includes assets such as bitcoin, ether, BNB, XRP, Solana (SOL), and Hyperliquid (HYPE), among others.

Another key distinction is that the fund is actively managed. Rather than tracking a fixed index, its managers can adjust allocations based on market trends, research insights, and risk evaluations. According to T. Rowe Price, this approach aims to take advantage of shifts in market leadership and momentum as capital moves between different crypto assets.

The launch comes as asset managers continue to expand their digital asset offerings beyond single-token products. Earlier this month, BlackRock introduced a bitcoin income ETF designed to generate yield from its spot bitcoin ETF using options strategies, underscoring the growing trend toward more specialized crypto investment vehicles.

Actively managed crypto funds may help investors navigate the market’s volatility and rapidly evolving trends. However, critics point out that such funds often come with higher fees and must consistently outperform passive strategies to justify their cost.

TKNZ currently carries a net management fee of 0.75% through May 2027 under a temporary fee waiver, after which it is expected to rise to 0.90%.

The fund is led by Blue Macellari, T. Rowe Price’s head of digital assets, along with four co-portfolio managers. Since 2022, Macellari has overseen the firm’s digital asset strategy, including research on cryptocurrencies, blockchain networks, and related investment products.

The launch follows several years of groundwork. T. Rowe Price developed its own digital asset trading infrastructure and partnered with institutional service providers to support trading and operations before introducing its first crypto ETF.
