Ripple Update: x402 Upgrade Transforms XRP Ledger Settlements

The x402 protocol has enabled 1.43 million agent-driven transactions and facilitated 4,463 XRP in merchant settlements on the XRP Ledger, marking the first concrete sign of real-world adoption of agentic payments.

In the latest Ripple update, the XRP Ledger logged 1,434,517 autonomous AI agent transactions as of July 22, 2026—representing a 127% surge since the x402 protocol was integrated on June 9.

A total of 129 merchants processed settlements amounting to 4,463.24 XRP and 1,895.14 RLUSD through machine-to-machine payment channels. Meanwhile, active wallet addresses climbed to a record 8.45 million, according to CoinMarketCap data.

This development represents the first consistent proof that a dedicated agentic payments layer built on a public blockchain can drive merchant adoption and generate meaningful settlement activity within weeks of launch, without relying on speculative trading.

The update comes as XRP is down 0.5% over the past 24 hours, trading at $1.12. Maintaining support at $1.10 remains key for any potential move toward $1.20, with daily trading volume currently at $924 million.

The x402 protocol operates by leveraging the HTTP 402 “payment required” response, allowing AI agents to transact with other agents or services—paying for compute power, data, or API access—without the need for manual wallet handling or human approval.

Transactions are settled on the XRP Ledger within seconds, with fees burned on each transfer, gradually reducing the circulating supply through every agent-driven payment.

RippleX engineering head J. Ayo Akinyele described current volumes as an early benchmark, estimating the network could handle between 10 million and 100 million agentic transactions within the next two years.

The rollout of x402 on June 9 was followed by Ripple’s release of the XRPL AI Starter Kit on June 10, a developer toolkit that enables AI agents to execute payments via the ledger, including integrations with the Claude API.

Ripple has since joined the x402 Foundation under the Linux Foundation and expanded the XRPL AI Hub—a platform offering real-time tracking of x402 payment activity, developer tools, and AI agent integration support. The hub was developed with contributions from Ripple engineers and the XRP Ledger Foundation.

According to boerse-global.de, XRP settlement volume via x402 has jumped 289% since the launch of the XRPL AI Starter Kit. RLUSD plays a complementary role in these transactions, reflecting a dual-asset strategy where XRP handles crypto-native settlements, while RLUSD provides stability for counterparties requiring a stablecoin.

Ripple vice president Fiona Murray noted at the WebX conference in mid-July that monthly transaction volume on the XRP Ledger has increased twelvefold since RLUSD’s introduction.

Despite strong on-chain activity, institutional signals remain mixed. On July 20, S&P Dow Jones Indices and Pantera Capital introduced the S&P Pantera Digital Asset Index, which includes 18 assets selected based on market capitalization and liquidity thresholds. XRP was notably excluded, with no official explanation. S&P’s Cathy Clay stated the index prioritizes measurable economic activity over price-driven momentum.

Attention has now shifted from whether the XRP Ledger can generate transaction volume—recently confirmed at 1.43 million payments—to whether existing revenue recognition models for digital assets can keep pace with protocol-level utility.

On-chain data shows that wallets holding between 100,000 and 100 million XRP increased their holdings by 2.8% over five weeks, while inflows from large addresses to Binance dropped to their lowest levels since January 2025. Since November 2025, XRP spot ETF inflows have reached nearly $1.5 billion.

The disconnect between XRPL’s growing transaction metrics and its absence from institutional benchmarks could narrow if the x402 Foundation’s multi-chain strategy proves successful. By May 2026, x402 transactions across 14 blockchains had already surpassed 160 million, though sustained revenue generation will be key to meeting S&P’s inclusion criteria.
