Nearly $483 million worth of Bitcoin and Ether futures positions were liquidated over a 24-hour period as cryptocurrency prices declined on Thursday, with Ether traders bearing the largest share of the losses.
The market downturn intensified Thursday morning as uncertainty surrounding the Federal Reserve’s next interest-rate decision weighed on investor sentiment. Bitcoin traded near $81,000, down approximately 3% over 24 hours, while Ether fell more than 6% to around $2,350. XRP and Solana’s SOL declined about 5%, while Dogecoin dropped roughly 6%.
Data from CoinGlass, reviewed during Asian morning trading, showed that Ether accounted for approximately $286 million in liquidations, compared with $197 million for Bitcoin. Ether fell around 6.4% to $2,356, while Bitcoin declined approximately 3.2% to trade near $81,000.
Liquidations occur when traders use borrowed funds to open leveraged positions and market movements leave them with insufficient collateral to maintain their trades. The exchange then automatically closes the positions. For example, a trader using $1,000 in collateral to control a $10,000 position could face liquidation after a relatively small adverse price movement, depending on the applicable margin requirements.
These forced closures can intensify market declines by triggering additional selling. Traders may have their positions closed at prevailing market prices, even when they would prefer to hold their investments through the downturn.
Ether experienced substantially more liquidations than Bitcoin despite having a smaller futures market. Outstanding Ether futures positions totaled approximately $30 billion, compared with around $52 billion for Bitcoin.
Liquidation figures represent the value of positions forcibly closed, rather than the exact amount of money traders personally lost.
The sell-off also affected smaller cryptocurrencies. Solana futures recorded approximately $31 million in liquidations as SOL dropped around 5.5%. Zcash futures saw nearly $19 million in liquidations, while ZEC’s price fell approximately 13%.
