Jeffrey Huang, widely known as Machi Big Brother, saw his Hyperliquid trading account plunge from a peak of $12.25 million to roughly $21,000 following a liquidation event on October 15, 2026.
According to Lookonchain, Huang grew an initial investment of $56,000 into $12.25 million over four months before his account balance collapsed to approximately $21,800. The sharp reversal highlights how rapidly profits accumulated through leveraged trading can disappear.
The liquidation occurred as Bitcoin dropped below $81,000 and Ethereum moved toward $2,380 amid a broader selloff in crypto derivatives. When market prices move against leveraged traders, declining collateral values can trigger forced position closures, creating additional selling pressure in an already weakening market.
Bitget Research estimated that crypto derivatives liquidations totaled around $811 million on October 14, while open interest stood near $140.9 billion following the market downturn. Another liquidation wave over the 24 hours leading into October 9 reached $1.09 billion, with approximately $1.05 billion coming from long positions. The figures highlight the vulnerability of bullish traders to further price declines.
Broader economic concerns also contributed to the market’s risk-off sentiment. Annual inflation for September was reported at 3.7%, exceeding the 3.6% forecast. A higher-than-expected reading can pressure risk assets by strengthening expectations that monetary policy may remain restrictive. Inflation concerns and uncertainty surrounding potential interest-rate cuts added to the market’s challenges.
Ethereum faced additional pressure from investment flows. U.S. spot Ethereum exchange-traded funds recorded $542.2 million in weekly outflows during the period ending October 9. With Bitcoin trading below $81,000 and Ether approaching $2,380, Huang’s liquidation took place against a broader backdrop of weakening prices and strained leveraged positions.
The $80,000–$81,000 range emerged as an important support area for Bitcoin after its price fell below $81,000. A decisive move beneath a widely monitored support zone can prompt traders to reduce risk and trigger further liquidations, potentially amplifying market volatility.
Machi Big Brother’s Trading Fortune Reverses After a Massive Rally
The reported figures illustrate the scale of Huang’s trading reversal. His account reportedly started with $56,000, climbed to a peak of $12.25 million over four months, and fell to around $21,800 following liquidation. Based on those figures, the account lost approximately 99.8% of its peak value.
Hyperliquid perpetual futures allow traders to establish positions larger than their deposited collateral by using leverage. When losses push a position’s margin below the required threshold, the platform can forcibly close the trade. The amount remaining afterward depends on the collateral available, changes in the position and the execution price.
This distinction is important when evaluating leveraged crypto trading. An account’s peak value may include unrealized gains from open positions, whereas a liquidation can rapidly erode the collateral that remains. As a result, a large reported account valuation does not necessarily represent profits that have been fully realized or secured.
Hyperliquid has also seen substantial leveraged Ether trading activity. However, other large positions must be evaluated separately, and their existence does not establish the precise trades or losses responsible for Huang’s reported account decline.
Following the liquidation, Huang reportedly returned to trading and opened a new Ethereum long position using 25x leverage. A long trade generates gains when the underlying asset rises, but leverage also magnifies losses when prices move in the opposite direction. At 25x leverage, even a relatively small adverse move can significantly reduce the available margin.
The October 15 episode traced Huang’s reported trading journey from $56,000 to a $12.25 million peak and then to approximately $21,800. His new Ethereum position introduces another potential source of risk, although its exact liquidation price cannot be determined without verified details about the position size, entry price, collateral and margin arrangements.
