Live: Bitcoin Falls Below $63K as Oil and Treasury Yields Rise

  • Oil prices add to inflation concerns: WTI crude climbed above $82 a barrel, increasing inflationary pressure and weighing on risk assets as Treasury yields moved higher.
  • U.S. retail sales decline in July: Retail sales dropped 0.6% in July, according to government data released minutes ago. Economists had expected a 0.1% increase, while June sales rose 0.2%.
  • Core retail sales also disappoint: Excluding automobiles, retail sales declined 0.3% last month, compared with expectations for a 0.2% gain and a 0.2% decrease in June.

With major retailers already receiving extensive credit card data before the government release, markets had largely anticipated weaker figures, limiting the immediate reaction.

Even so, the softer sales data provide another indication that the Federal Reserve may have little reason to move quickly on interest rates.

Bitcoin Bulls Defend $62,800 Support

Bitcoin is trading near $62,800, a significant technical level positioned along the lower boundary of the Ichimoku cloud.

A move below that level could send Bitcoin beneath the cloud, which traders generally interpret as a bearish technical signal.

The Ichimoku cloud is a technical analysis indicator developed by Japanese journalist Goichi Hosoda and introduced in the 1960s. It is designed to help traders identify trends, support and resistance levels, and momentum. Moves through the cloud can signal potential bullish or bearish trend reversals.
