Binance Withdrawals Surge Past FTX Levels, but Crypto Liquidity Remains Resilient

Binance experienced billions of dollars in withdrawals following a record $6.3 billion security breach, reviving comparisons with the November 2022 collapse of FTX. However, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange appears to be demonstrating greater resilience, potentially preventing the latest crisis from turning into another industry-wide disaster.

During the first nine and a half hours after reopening its services on November 1, Binance processed $4.65 billion in withdrawals against $1.01 billion in deposits. This resulted in net outflows of approximately $3.64 billion. According to its October 28 Proof of Reserves report, Binance held $171 billion in total assets, meaning the withdrawal activity represented just 2.1% of its reported reserves.

Binance has also stated that it allocated more than $6.34 billion to address the incident, including $5 billion in assets involving the affected tokens. Additionally, the exchange reported that its partners had frozen approximately $3 billion connected to the attack.

But how does the latest situation compare with the FTX collapse?

Despite the similarities in withdrawal activity, the underlying circumstances are significantly different. FTX’s November 2022 crisis exposed serious liquidity deficiencies involving customer funds and its financial relationship with Alameda Research. Binance, on the other hand, has pledged to absorb the losses from the hack rather than transfer the financial burden to its customers.

Bitcoin’s price reaction provides another indication of how the current crisis differs from the FTX collapse. Following the $6.3 billion Binance exploit, BTC briefly declined toward $76,700 but managed to remain above the important $75,000 support zone before recovering toward $79,000.

The November 2022 market reaction was considerably more severe. Bitcoin dropped nearly 10% on November 8 as FTX’s withdrawal problems intensified. The following day, BTC plunged another 14.4%, closing around $15,877 after briefly touching $15,632.

Although the Binance incident triggered substantial withdrawals, widespread liquidations, and broader market uncertainty, Bitcoin has so far avoided the chain reaction of selling that followed FTX’s collapse. Its ability to maintain support above $75,000 indicates that investors may be viewing the latest incident primarily as a major exchange security breach rather than evidence of widespread liquidity problems throughout the crypto industry.

CZ’s $4.3 Billion Settlement Highlights Binance’s Previous Crisis Management

Binance has previously endured significant financial and regulatory challenges. In November 2023, the exchange agreed to pay more than $4 billion to settle investigations by U.S. authorities involving anti-money laundering controls and sanctions violations.

Its founder, Changpeng Zhao, also pleaded guilty to failing to maintain an effective anti-money laundering program. Following the agreement, Zhao stepped down as Binance CEO and paid an additional $50 million penalty.

Despite the substantial settlement, Binance maintained its position as the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange. The latest security breach represents another major challenge, testing its financial resources, operational capabilities, and ability to preserve customer confidence.

The broader crypto market has also experienced considerable pressure following the attack. Bitcoin and Ethereum declined, spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded significant outflows, and leveraged traders faced substantial liquidations. Nevertheless, both leading cryptocurrencies recovered part of their losses after reaching lower price levels.

Binance’s withdrawal figures have reached levels reminiscent of the FTX crisis, but its $171 billion in reported assets, commitment to covering hack-related losses, and Bitcoin’s relatively stable performance suggest a different market environment.

Can Binance Stabilize Withdrawals and Restore Investor Confidence?

The next important development will be whether withdrawal activity continues to normalize as Binance releases updated Proof of Reserves information and completes its security assessment.

Although the comparison with FTX highlights the extent of investor concern, similar withdrawal volumes do not necessarily indicate an identical financial outcome. Binance has resumed its services following billions of dollars in withdrawals, pledged to cover the stolen assets, and demonstrated that it can continue operating despite the scale of the exploit.

November has once again brought memories of the 2022 exchange collapse. However, Binance’s response to the latest crisis could determine whether the incident remains an isolated security failure or develops into a broader threat to cryptocurrency market stability.
