The XRP Ledger is approaching a major network upgrade designed to remove existing code issues and enhance overall reliability. The amendment has secured support from 29 of 35 trusted validators, with activation projected for October 23.
At the same time, separate proposals to introduce lending services and additional digital asset management features have attracted fewer validator votes. These initiatives remain at different stages of the approval process. If adopted, they could broaden the XRPL’s decentralized finance ecosystem by enabling users to lend assets and access additional financial services directly on the network.
The XRPL’s fixCleanup3_4_0 amendment is expected to activate at 09:34 UTC on October 23. Its amendment tracker showed 29 votes in favor on October 9, and the total remained unchanged as of October 19.
The amendment bundles several fixes affecting newer DeFi infrastructure. These include improvements to precision and rounding for vault deposits, withdrawals, and clawbacks, alongside refinements to freezing, authorization, credentials, and destination handling within Single Asset Vaults and the Lending Protocol.
For an XRPL amendment to activate, it must maintain support above 80% throughout a 14-day voting period. Votes are recorded at flag ledgers, which occur approximately every 16.5 minutes. Consequently, activation begins at the first qualifying flag ledger after the voting period concludes, rather than at the exact moment the period expires. The ledger’s recorded result takes precedence over the tracker’s displayed count.
The planned October 23 activation remains dependent on continued validator support. If it proceeds as expected, it will introduce the cleanup package but will not automatically activate the broader lending market. The xrpld 3.4.0 release describes LendingProtocolV1_1 as an extension that introduces closed-ended vaults and cash-basis accounting.
The proposed Lending Protocol is designed around fixed-term, uncollateralized loans financed by depositors through a Single Vault administered by brokers. Borrowers repay according to predetermined terms, while credit assessments occur off-chain. Under the current design, collateral management and loan liquidations are not automated on-chain.
Some brokers may provide first-loss capital to cover defaults before depositor funds are affected. However, this arrangement does not remove the underlying credit risk. One documented example involves a 1,090-token default, in which 10.9 tokens are returned while the vault absorbs a loss of 1,079.1 tokens.
When borrowers miss payments, a grace period applies before the broker can declare the loan in default. This highlights the difference between preparing the code and approving the lending system: the cleanup amendment improves implementation, while validator governance determines whether Single Asset Vaults and lending-related amendments can become active.
Developments involving RLUSD payments and settlement remain separate from the lending proposals. Ripple’s API partnership with Cross River illustrates progress along this independent track.
For fixCleanup3_4_0, the next key milestone is the first qualifying flag ledger after the 14-day voting period, provided support remains above 80%. The Lending Protocol and LendingProtocolV1_1 amendments must each secure 29 votes and maintain the required level of support before their respective activation countdowns can begin. Single Asset Vault, meanwhile, needs at least eight additional votes based on its October 19 tally.
Validator approval therefore remains the main obstacle to expanding lending services on the XRP Ledger. The cleanup amendment is projected to activate at 09:34 UTC on October 23, while voting results continue to be checked at flag ledgers approximately every 16.5 minutes.
Overall, the developments indicate continued progress in the XRP Ledger’s technical improvements and growing validator backing for network upgrades. Although lending remains subject to separate governance decisions, future amendments could strengthen network reliability and expand XRPL’s role beyond payments.
