XRP Ledger Batch Upgrade Nears Launch as Demand Remains Uncertain

Ripple’s XRP has gained 22.2% over the past seven days, reaching $1.58, with the rally coming just before a September 29 deadline for the XRP Ledger’s updated Batch amendment. As of September 20, 30 of the network’s 35 validators had backed the upgrade, putting support well above the required threshold but leaving room for changes before activation. The key issue is no longer simply whether validators approve the code, but whether the upgraded ledger can generate additional demand for XRP.

That distinction is important for traders monitoring XRP derivatives positioning and the reset in open interest ahead of the deadline. Price movements and changes to the protocol are developing along separate paths this week.

What the New XRP Ledger Batch Upgrade Changes

The Batch amendment allows two to eight standard XRP Ledger transactions to be grouped within a single outer transaction that controls how the bundle is processed. It offers four operating modes, each with implications for how institutional participants can manage settlement risks on the network.

The All or Nothing mode has attracted particular attention from institutional users. For a securities transaction, it allows the asset transfer and corresponding payment to either settle together or be canceled together, eliminating the possibility that only one side of the transaction is completed. Batch also enables exchanges, wallets and marketplaces to include their own fees within a customer transaction, allowing the fee and underlying trade to settle simultaneously.

Why September 29 Is a Conditional Deadline

For the amendment to activate, at least 28 of the 35 validators must support it, representing the required 80%-plus approval level, for 14 consecutive days. With 30 validators supporting the proposal as of September 20, the Batch amendment is currently positioned for activation on September 29 at 14:06 UTC, provided support remains unchanged.

That condition remains important because validator operators can alter their votes at any time before the deadline. If support falls below the required threshold, the 14-day voting period resets, potentially delaying activation by several weeks.

According to the voting rules published by the XRP Ledger, two of the 30 current supporters could still change their positions before the voting window ends.

This is also not Batch’s first attempt to reach activation. An earlier version was withdrawn in 2026 after auditors identified a vulnerability that could potentially have enabled unauthorized transactions. No user funds were put at risk, however.

The revised version was released on September 14 and has subsequently completed three external reviews, bringing the amendment to its closest point to activation since the earlier version was withdrawn.

A More Capable Ledger Does Not Automatically Mean New XRP Demand

Support from 30 of 35 validators puts the amendment on course for activation, but it does not guarantee that the upgrade will go live or determine how XRP will perform once it does. Batch itself does not require XRP, meaning that combining settlement operations into a single atomic transaction does not automatically create additional demand for the token.

Any sustained impact on XRP will depend on whether asset managers reportedly testing the Batch functionality eventually use it for real-world production activity and whether that activity generates additional liquidity requirements for the ledger.

Ripple’s delivery-versus-payment functionality represents a genuine infrastructure development, but greater infrastructure capability does not necessarily translate into increased buying demand. The distinction has also emerged in discussions around Ripple’s other payment integrations and their market impact.

XRP’s 22.2% weekly increase also occurred alongside a 13.9% rise in Bitcoin over the same period.

The simultaneous gains across the broader crypto market do not establish that expectations surrounding Batch were responsible for XRP’s rally. The available data does not separately identify the amendment as the specific catalyst behind the price increase.

What Could Happen Before and After September 29

If validator support remains above the required threshold through the deadline, the Batch amendment will activate on September 29 at 14:06 UTC, turning Ripple’s all-or-nothing settlement capability into a live feature rather than a proposed functionality. If support falls below the threshold before then, the 14-day voting period will restart, creating a new activation timeline for the market to consider.

The more significant test, however, begins after activation. If the asset managers and commercial projects referenced by Akinyele move actual transactions onto the XRP Ledger, Batch could gradually increase the network’s appeal for institutional settlement activity.

If that adoption fails to develop, the XRP Ledger could still benefit from a more efficient transaction framework without generating additional demand for XRP. In that case, the technical upgrade would succeed while the underlying question around token demand would remain unresolved.
