Ripple has released version 1.1 of its XRPL AI Starter Kit, adding support for the Machine Payments Protocol (MPP), an open standard co-developed by Stripe and Tempo for enabling software agents to pay for online services without going through traditional checkout pages. The update also introduces Open Wallet Standard support, giving developers a standardized way to manage wallets across different blockchain networks.
With the new functionality, developers can create AI agents capable of paying for data, computing resources and other digital services using XRP or Ripple’s dollar-pegged stablecoin, RLUSD. For now, the development is more significant from a technical standpoint than a commercial one. The toolkit is still in beta, and Ripple has not identified any commercial customers using the MPP integration or provided payment-volume data.
MPP follows a straightforward process. A service sends an agent a price after receiving a request, the agent approves the payment, and the service then provides the requested resource. The process does not require a person to interact with a checkout interface, allowing payment to become part of the agent’s automated workflow.
Ripple is also supporting multiple payment standards rather than relying exclusively on MPP. The company introduced support for x402, another web-payment protocol, in June. MPP has now been added alongside x402 instead of replacing it. This approach provides flexibility while the emerging agent-payment sector continues to develop without a clear dominant payment rail.
The broader development also reflects the growing role of utility-based narratives in discussions around XRP. As AI-driven applications expand, practical payment use cases are increasingly being considered alongside speculative arguments when evaluating the token.
Developers already working with Stripe and Tempo’s open protocol can now integrate XRP or RLUSD payments through Ripple’s tooling without redesigning their applications around a new blockchain. One-time payments support both XRP and issued assets such as RLUSD from the outset.
Recurring payment sessions currently have a narrower scope and require XRP. The model is designed to allow an AI agent to deposit XRP once and then make hundreds of smaller payments for queries, authorizing additional spending after individual responses. Instead of recording every query separately on the ledger, the service provider can collect the accumulated amount.
Stablecoin support for this session-based model is not yet available. It depends on a proposed XRPL upgrade that has not been deployed, meaning RLUSD payment channels are not currently live.
The Open Wallet Standard addresses a separate challenge involving wallet and key management across multiple blockchains. Through the standard interface, agents can request transactions without gaining direct access to private keys. Controls such as spending limits and approved destination addresses can also be incorporated into the process.
By supporting both x402 and MPP, Ripple gives developers a way to connect their chosen payment protocol to the XRP Ledger regardless of which standard they adopted initially. Strategically, this allows XRP and RLUSD to become payment options within applications whose developers may have selected their payment infrastructure before deciding which blockchain to use.
There are still important limitations. The XRPL AI Starter Kit remains in beta, Ripple has not announced a commercial customer using its MPP integration, and the company has not released transaction-volume figures demonstrating real-world adoption.
The more important developments to monitor are the proposed XRPL upgrade that would enable stablecoin payment sessions and whether developers using MPP or x402 begin reporting meaningful transaction activity through the XRP Ledger. Until those developments occur, the release primarily gives Ripple greater flexibility in the emerging agent-payment standards market rather than demonstrating significant real-world XRP payment adoption.
