HYPE Surges 23% as CFTC Move Boosts Hyperliquid’s US Prospects
2 hours ago
Hyperliquid’s HYPE token climbed 19.3% as comments from President Donald Trump fueled optimism around a potential compliant route for the platform to enter the US market, though no approval has been granted.
HYPE rallied on Aug. 19 and Aug. 20 after Trump said the Commodity Futures Trading Commission was working toward bringing Hyperliquid into the US through a legal and fully compliant framework.
CoinGecko data showed HYPE trading at around $71.90 on Aug. 20, up more than 23% over 24 hours and 26% over the past week. The token ranked among the market’s strongest performers, alongside Ethereum, which gained 18.5%, as total crypto market capitalization jumped 7.5% overnight to $2.45 trillion.
Trump’s remarks do not represent regulatory clearance, registration or authorization for Hyperliquid to operate in the US. However, they have strengthened expectations that on-chain perpetual futures could eventually gain a formal regulatory route into the American market instead of remaining limited outside the US.
CFTC Meeting Puts Hyperliquid in the Spotlight
The CFTC’s first Innovation Advisory Committee meeting was scheduled for Aug. 20 at 1 p.m. Eastern in Washington. The committee is focused on examining how financial regulation can adapt to emerging technologies and digital asset markets.
Market participants are closely watching the meeting for potential discussions surrounding on-chain derivatives and regulatory frameworks that could apply to platforms such as Hyperliquid.
While the meeting and its broader innovation-focused agenda have been publicly confirmed, there is no indication that the committee will approve a specific framework for Hyperliquid, authorize its US operations or provide a launch timeline.
CFTC Chairman Michael Selig has previously characterized on-chain markets as potentially transformative and said the agency was interested in developing a compliant framework for their operation in the US.
Coinbase said on Aug. 19 that eligible Base App users would receive access to more than 290 perpetual futures markets through Hyperliquid.
Depending on the underlying asset, the service offers leverage of up to 50x and includes perpetual markets linked to cryptocurrencies, stocks and commodities.
Hyperliquid handles trade execution, liquidity and on-chain settlement, while Base App provides the front-end experience for users.
The service remains unavailable to users in the US, UK, Canada and other jurisdictions where leveraged digital asset derivatives are restricted. These limitations underscore the difference between Hyperliquid’s current offshore model and a potential regulated US offering.
Open Interest and Liquidations Point to Heavy Positioning
Aggregate futures open interest stood at roughly $3.01 billion on Aug. 20, up $425.32 million, or 16.43%, over the previous 30 days. During that period, open interest fell to about $2.17 billion before climbing to a recent peak near $3.16 billion.
Total liquidations over the previous 24 hours reached approximately $43.21 million. Short positions accounted for about $37.86 million, or 87.6% of the total.
When open interest rises alongside a token’s price, it typically suggests traders are adding new positions rather than simply closing losing shorts. For HYPE, the data point to a mix of fresh speculative buying and forced short-position closures.
Funding rates remained positive during 152 of the previous 180 four-hour periods. The latest rate stood at 0.0125% per four hours, above the 30-day average of 0.0038%, while Binance’s long-to-short account ratio was around 1.8.
The figures show that traders are becoming increasingly positioned for further upside. While that can reinforce bullish momentum, it also leaves the market more exposed to sharp swings if sentiment reverses.
Hyperliquid Moves Into Crypto’s Top 10
CoinGecko valued HYPE’s market capitalization at approximately $16 billion, placing the token at No. 10 among cryptocurrencies. Its 24-hour trading volume stood near $1.49 billion.
Trump’s regulatory comments, Hyperliquid’s Base App integration and the rise in derivatives activity have collectively increased attention on the platform’s growing role in perpetual futures trading.
The key caveat is that Hyperliquid has not received confirmed CFTC approval or authorization to launch in the US. Any setback, clarification or reversal in the regulatory narrative could therefore trigger significant volatility in HYPE.
