Aviva Investors and Ripple have launched a Central Bank of Ireland (CBI)-approved tokenized fund on the XRP Ledger (XRPL), offering EU asset managers a real-world template for complying with public blockchain regulations.
On July 29, 2026, the two firms introduced a tokenized share class of the Aviva Investors USD Liquidity Fund on XRPL, marking the first public blockchain-based fund structure to receive approval from the Central Bank of Ireland.
In this setup, BNY Mellon safeguards the underlying assets, Komainu delivers regulated digital asset custody, and Licuido powers the tokenization infrastructure.
This development goes beyond a typical institutional crypto pilot. It represents the first instance of a major EU regulator approving a tokenized fund on a public blockchain, providing asset managers across Ireland and the wider EU with a practical compliance model rather than a purely theoretical concept.
The announcement coincided with XRP declining 0.7% overnight, trading near $1.08 after slipping below the $1.10 support level. Meanwhile, Ripple’s daily trading volume rose to $1.14 billion from $1.05 billion the previous day.
Ripple Partnership Background: From Announcement to Deployment
The collaboration was first revealed on February 11, 2026, when both firms outlined plans to tokenize multiple fund products on XRPL across various asset classes over several years. The USD Liquidity Fund’s tokenized share class now represents the first live implementation of that strategy—an operational rollout rather than a test environment.
The fund is designed to provide daily liquidity through investments in high-quality, USD-denominated short-term debt instruments. It maintains the same investment goals, risk characteristics, and regulatory safeguards as its traditional counterpart. Investors with compatible digital wallets can access the fund under the same conditions as conventional units, with XRPL serving as the transaction and record-keeping layer.
Institutional Framework and XRPL Infrastructure
The structure operates through a coordinated system: Licuido issues the tokenized shares on XRPL, Komainu manages custody of the digital assets within a regulated framework, and BNY Mellon retains custody of the underlying assets in the traditional financial system. This hybrid model merges established financial infrastructure with blockchain-based settlement.
Since its launch in 2012, XRPL has processed over 4 billion transactions, supports around 8 million active wallets, and operates through more than 130 independent validators.
Its fast, low-cost settlement and built-in tokenization capabilities were key reasons for its selection, particularly for institutional use cases requiring reliable transaction finality and integrated compliance features.
Nigel Khakoo, Ripple’s Senior Vice President of Trading and Markets, stated that the launch demonstrates how a fully regulated, institutional-grade tokenized product can be deployed on live blockchain infrastructure with strong investor protections.
Aviva Investors CEO Mark Versey described tokenization as a transformative development for the investment industry and highlighted the Ripple partnership as instrumental in bringing the product to market.
RWA Tokenization and Regulatory Implications
The focus has now shifted from whether real-world assets can be tokenized on public blockchains to whether regulators will provide the clarity needed for institutional adoption at scale.
The CBI’s approval effectively answers that question within Ireland, positioning this fund as a model that other EU-based asset managers can replicate.
A key near-term impact may be seen among firms deciding between public and private distributed ledger networks for tokenizing real-world assets. The presence of a CBI-approved structure on a public chain significantly lowers perceived regulatory risks associated with such choices.
As of 2025, Aviva Investors managed roughly $310 billion in assets. Both companies have indicated that this launch is just the beginning of a broader pipeline of tokenized fund products on XRPL.
The pace at which additional funds secure CBI approval will determine whether this milestone remains a one-off achievement or evolves into a sustained tokenization program on the XRP Ledger.
