Cryptocurrency companies seeking to operate in the U.K. have five months to apply to the country’s financial regulator under a new authorization process.
The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) opened its “authorization gateway” on Wednesday, giving firms until the end of February 2027 to submit their applications.
The U.K.’s regulatory framework for digital asset companies has been years in the making, with the first legislative efforts dating back to 2022.
Compared with other jurisdictions, including the European Union (EU), the U.K.’s move toward formal cryptocurrency regulation has progressed relatively slowly. The EU’s Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) Regulation took effect in June 2023, around the same period that the U.K.’s relevant legislation was only becoming law.
The process began to move forward more clearly late last year, when the FCA announced that its new regulatory framework would come into force in October 2027. Companies would have a defined period before then to apply for authorization.
The February 2027 cutoff gives firms a relatively tight five-month period to prepare and file their applications. Companies that already secured registration under the FCA’s existing regime, which has primarily focused on anti-money laundering requirements, could have an advantage because some of the required groundwork may already be in place.
Zumo, a cryptocurrency infrastructure platform that received FCA registration in 2021, is among the more than 60 firms operating under the existing framework. The Edinburgh-based company has developed a “U.K. Cryptoasset Regulation Tracker” designed to explain the upcoming requirements and track key regulatory deadlines.
“Everyone else publishing a tracker is a law firm or consultancy. We’re developing ours as industry operators,” Zumo founder and CEO Nick Jones said in an emailed announcement on Wednesday.
“Building it has meant reading the regime rules right down to the level of every individual obligation, mapping each one to the regulated activity it attaches to, and keeping that mapping current as further papers land.”
