Mirae’s Korbit Vision: Building South Korea’s Next-Generation Crypto Platform

Mirae Asset, one of South Korea’s largest financial groups, said its newly acquired crypto exchange Korbit — which will be rebranded as Digital X — is only the first step toward creating a broader digital asset ecosystem connecting real-world assets (RWAs), stablecoins, and cryptocurrencies.

Rather than simply expanding Korbit’s market share, Mirae Asset aims to transform the platform into an “intelligent investment platform” that combines investment knowledge, market information, and advanced research capabilities.

“We plan to enhance investor education and research functions while developing Digital X into an intelligent investment platform where information, expertise, and deeper investment insights are seamlessly connected,” the company told CoinDesk.

The Digital X rebrand reflects Mirae’s wider strategy for the exchange. According to the company, the “X” represents an unexplored future and the unlimited possibilities created when different forms of value come together.

Mirae Asset Financial Group is among Asia’s largest independent financial and asset management firms, with total assets under management reportedly reaching around $1 trillion as of May.

Beyond a simple rebrand

Mirae’s plans extend far beyond changing Korbit’s name.

The company intends to create an integrated investment ecosystem where real-world assets, security token offerings (STOs), stablecoins, traditional financial products, and digital assets can operate together. The goal is to position Digital X as a core financial infrastructure platform rather than just another cryptocurrency exchange competing for trading activity in South Korea’s crowded market.

Korbit currently accounts for less than 1% of South Korea’s crypto market, trailing dominant platforms such as Upbit and Bithumb. However, Mirae Asset said its objective is not to directly challenge existing exchanges but to support the long-term development of the digital asset sector.

“We aim to combine Mirae Asset’s global investment expertise with Korbit’s digital asset capabilities to support sustainable growth of the digital asset industry in Korea and worldwide,” the company said.

In practice, Mirae’s strategy is focused on building a comprehensive platform that combines institutional investment experience, research, education, and digital asset services rather than simply competing on trading volume.

The firm also emphasized that Digital X will maintain strict compliance standards, including anti-money laundering (AML), know-your-customer (KYC), and fraud prevention measures. The focus suggests the platform is being designed to appeal to institutional investors as well as retail users.

Mirae Asset Consulting, an affiliate of Mirae Asset, recently raised its ownership stake in Korbit to 97.15%, completing the acquisition after receiving approval from South Korea’s Fair Trade Commission.

The company said the acquisition followed regulatory requirements and was structured after reviewing each affiliate’s business role and potential synergies with the digital asset sector.

For now, Mirae Asset has no plans to acquire the remaining shares. Instead, the company said it will concentrate on improving Digital X’s competitiveness and expanding its role within the digital asset ecosystem.
