Musk Shuts Down Dogecoin Dreams: “No DOGE in D.O.G.E.”
For a brief moment, Dogecoin fans let their imaginations run wild. A government agency named D.O.G.E., a Dogecoin logo on its site after Trump’s inauguration—it all seemed too perfect.
But over the weekend, Elon Musk threw cold water on the hype.
“There are no plans for the government to use Dogecoin or anything,” Musk said bluntly during a town hall event in Green Bay, Wisconsin.
The hopes were rooted in coincidence. Musk admitted the name “Department of Government Efficiency” came from the internet. “I was going to go with something boring like the Government Efficiency Commission,” he said, “but the internet had a better idea. So I rolled with it.”
The crypto crowd didn’t need more than that. For a few hours, the department’s website even featured the Dogecoin logo—enough to send DOGE fanatics into a frenzy and spark a short-lived rally in the token.
But the memecoin wasn’t ever part of the official plan. And following Musk’s statement, DOGE took a 3.5% dip, aligning with a broader market slide.
Despite the name confusion, the D.O.G.E. agency itself has been surprisingly effective. Since its formal launch in January, it’s reportedly saved taxpayers around $130 billion—averaging about $840 per person—by cutting government inefficiencies.
So while Dogecoin isn’t getting a government job, the agency with its name is still making moves.
