Bitcoin Forms Golden Cross as Bullish Momentum Returns

Bitcoin has officially formed a golden cross on its daily chart, giving bulls a closely watched technical signal that could point toward a longer-term uptrend.

The long-awaited bullish crossover has now appeared.

Bitcoin’s 50-day simple moving average has moved above its 200-day average, creating the golden cross that traders commonly view as a sign of strengthening momentum. While the pattern is considered bullish, its historical performance as a standalone indicator has been inconsistent.

A golden cross develops when an asset’s shorter-term 50-day average rises above its longer-term 200-day average. The crossover suggests that recent price momentum has overtaken the broader trend, potentially creating conditions for an extended advance.

Bitcoin has experienced 12 such signals throughout its history, although the results have varied considerably. CoinDesk examined the historical record in detail last week.

Only three of those 12 golden crosses remained intact for an entire year. Those successful instances delivered an average return of about 250% over the following 12 months. Among the other nine cases where three-month performance could be measured, Bitcoin posted an average gain of 24.9% over that period.

The latest crossover should therefore not be treated as confirmation of a sustained bull market. Historical data indicates that golden crosses have produced early bull traps roughly three times as often as they have preceded lasting multi-year rallies.

Bitcoin was trading at approximately $78,650 at the time of writing, representing a 0.6% decline since midnight UTC, according to CoinDesk data.
