Alberta Gets New Gas-Powered Bitcoin Mine as AgriFORCE Eyes 1 EH/s Expansion

AgriFORCE Rolls Out Alberta Gas-Powered Bitcoin Mining Hub, Sets Sights on 1 EH/s

Amid the growing intersection of energy and blockchain technology, AgriFORCE Growing Systems (AGRI) has launched its first bitcoin mining and digital compute facility in Berwyn, Alberta, fueled entirely by stranded natural gas.

The venture, developed alongside partner BlueFlare Energy, brings online 120 mining machines, consuming 425 kilowatts (kW) and delivering more than 32 petahashes per second (PH/s) of bitcoin hash power. Plans are already underway to boost the site’s capacity by an additional 200 kW, according to the companies.

At the heart of the operation is BlueFlare’s proprietary system, which continuously tracks emissions and provides real-time telemetry data, ensuring environmental oversight and operational transparency.

Using flared gas for bitcoin mining has gained popularity as miners look to lower operational costs and tap into energy streams that would otherwise be wasted. The approach converts surplus gas—often a byproduct of oil and gas drilling—into profitable compute resources, offsetting margin pressures plaguing the industry.

This Alberta launch marks the first step in AgriFORCE’s broader strategy, which hinges on three pillars: bitcoin mining, modular compute infrastructure development, and direct energy monetization.

Momentum for the initiative has accelerated with a new binding agreement between AgriFORCE and BlueFlare to expand to additional sites in Oyen and Hinton, Alberta. Collectively, these new deployments could bring online as much as 1.3 megawatts (MW) of additional gas-powered compute capacity. Beyond bitcoin mining, these resources may also support AI inference workloads and edge computing needs for industrial applications.

Unlike many traditional mining operations tied to grid power, AgriFORCE’s model capitalizes on off-grid resources, allowing for rapid deployment and reduced dependency on regional utilities. The firm reports having mined seven BTC to date across its Alberta and Ohio facilities, with plans to retain up to half of its bitcoin holdings while channeling the rest into further expansion.

Looking forward, AgriFORCE aims to scale its operations significantly, targeting 1 exahash per second (EH/s) of total compute power by Q1 2026, placing itself firmly in the evolving landscape where energy markets meet decentralized infrastructure.
