Japan’s SBI Group Launches Crypto Redemption for Credit Card Points
SBI Group’s APLUS program in Japan has become the first to offer credit card users the option to redeem their loyalty points for cryptocurrencies such as bitcoin (BTC), ether (ETH), and XRP. This new feature expands the usual rewards, which typically include cashbacks or partner gift options.
Cardholders can now convert their accumulated points into small amounts of digital assets, with 2,100 points currently redeemable for just over 2,000 yen (around $13). These tokens are provided by SBI’s exchange arm and credited directly to users’ VC Trade accounts.
While the crypto rewards are modest, this move marks a significant step in integrating digital currencies into mainstream consumer programs. SBI has a long history of supporting Ripple, with XRP being the first token listed on its VC Trade exchange back in 2018.
This initiative reflects the growing acceptance of cryptocurrencies within Japan’s regulatory framework, offering everyday users a simple and compliant way to engage with digital assets without heavy marketing or speculative risk.
