Treasury Auction Surprises With Strong Demand as U.S. Debt Tops $36 Trillion, Gold and Bitcoin Still Linger in the Background
Concerns over U.S. fiscal stability didn’t stop investors from piling into Treasuries this week. Wednesday’s 10-year bond auction attracted significant demand, easing fears that global investors might be rotating out of U.S. debt in favor of hard assets like gold and bitcoin.
The $39 billion sale cleared with a 4.421% yield and a bid-to-cover ratio above 2.5 — a strong showing that points to deep investor interest despite headlines warning of debt saturation. Primary dealers took down just 9% of the issue, among the lowest on record, signaling real money investors led the charge.
This comes at a time when U.S. national debt has ballooned past $36 trillion — now more than 120% of GDP — while the federal deficit reached $1.8 trillion last year and is expected to widen further with President Trump’s renewed tax cuts. Annual interest payments have already reached $1 trillion.
Next Test: 30-Year Bonds on Deck
The focus now shifts to Thursday’s $22 billion auction of 30-year Treasuries, a more sensitive gauge of long-term investor confidence in the U.S. fiscal trajectory. The outcome could shape the broader market’s view on whether Treasuries retain their safe-haven status — or whether investors start looking harder at inflation hedges.
Hard Assets Still in Play
Despite the strong 10-year auction, some market watchers say demand for bitcoin and gold remains part of a growing hedge strategy against long-term U.S. fiscal erosion. With the dollar facing structural risks and policy constraints tightening, hard money narratives are gaining renewed traction.
“The 10-year auction tells us investors haven’t abandoned Treasuries yet,” one macro strategist said. “But with debt levels climbing and policy room shrinking, gold and crypto aren’t going away.”
The real test will be whether Thursday’s long bond auction sends the same reassuring signal — or reveals deeper concerns about the U.S. government’s balance sheet.
