Sony’s Soneium Blockchain Sparks PlayStation and GTA 6 Crypto Speculation

Soneium, the blockchain platform tied to Sony Group’s Web3 strategy, announced plans to launch its native ecosystem token, SONEIUM, on October 26. The initiative is designed to connect entertainment intellectual property (IP), creators, developers, fans, and investors through a blockchain-powered economy.

Soneium already hosts more than 250 applications spanning gaming, music, anime, films, collectibles, and fan-created content. Its next development phase focuses on tokenized intellectual property, potentially giving creators and rights holders new ways to raise funds while allowing fans to support the entertainment projects they value.

Moriusa, a character-based IP developed by Tokyo-based entertainment group Super State Holdings, will be the first project introduced under the initiative. Soneium also intends to collaborate with K-pop intellectual property company DayOneDream to tokenize royalties generated by concert-related businesses.

These developments illustrate the broader goal behind Sony’s Soneium ecosystem coin: creating a connection between entertainment companies and communities interested in participating in their commercial growth.

Instead of concentrating solely on cryptocurrency trading, Soneium aims to build an economic system around the value of creative content. Planned offerings include IP Vault, which would provide indirect exposure to entertainment investment opportunities, and IP Bond, a bond product supported by entertainment businesses.

The announcement also raises an intriguing question for gamers: could blockchain technology eventually become part of the PlayStation ecosystem and major gaming franchises such as Grand Theft Auto VI?

PlayStation and GTA 6: Could Sony Be Exploring a New Crypto Era for Gaming?

PlayStation naturally stands out when considering Sony’s influence on the gaming industry. At the same time, GTA 6 is expected to rank among the most significant entertainment releases of its generation, demonstrating the commercial potential of major gaming intellectual property.

This raises the possibility of blockchain technology giving fans ways to participate in gaming-related economies beyond simply buying and playing games.

Soneium’s proposed infrastructure is intended to make intellectual property licensing, attribution, and royalty distribution programmable through blockchain technology. In theory, comparable systems could facilitate authorized digital collectibles, licensed fan projects, and alternative funding models for entertainment ventures.

Such capabilities could open new possibilities for gaming and digital entertainment. Fans might eventually be able to support independent game developers or participate in the commercial success of officially licensed entertainment projects through tokenized assets.

However, the potential connection to PlayStation and GTA 6 remains speculative. The SONEIUM announcement does not, by itself, establish that Sony plans to introduce cryptocurrency features into PlayStation games or that Rockstar Games intends to integrate blockchain technology into GTA 6.

Soneium Executive Emphasizes Creators in the New Coin Strategy

A Soneium executive emphasized that the initiative is intended to help creators secure funding for future projects on a larger scale while exploring new forms of creative expression and stronger relationships with their audiences.

The comments underscore the economic framework Soneium hopes to establish. Tokenized intellectual property could give creators additional ways to raise capital from their communities, while programmable revenue-sharing mechanisms could distribute earnings according to predetermined agreements.

The company is also developing an Onchain IP Architecture consisting of three components: an IP Registry, an IP Graph, and an IP Execution Layer. These systems are intended to connect creative works with ownership information, licensing arrangements, and revenue distribution mechanisms.

Such infrastructure could become increasingly relevant as artificial intelligence makes it easier to generate, modify, and remix digital content. Establishing clearer links between intellectual property, usage rights, and payments could help creators and rights holders manage their work in this evolving environment.

By combining entertainment financing, digital ownership, and programmable licensing, Soneium is positioning its ecosystem coin as part of a broader strategy that extends beyond a conventional gaming cryptocurrency. Whether that strategy eventually reaches PlayStation or major franchises such as GTA 6 remains an open question.
