Bitcoin extended its recovery on Monday, climbing around 0.8% to approximately $82,700 as stronger-than-expected Chinese economic growth and a rebound in Nasdaq futures lifted market sentiment. The CoinDesk 80 index rose 1.3%, outperforming Bitcoin-focused benchmarks, with decentralized finance (DeFi) tokens leading the broader altcoin advance.
Bitcoin (BTC) traded near $82,500, gaining roughly 0.5% since midnight UTC. The move extended a rebound from Sunday’s low of around $80,700 and kept the cryptocurrency above the brief dip below $80,000 recorded on Thursday.
Altcoins generally outperformed Bitcoin. Ether (ETH) climbed 0.75% to approximately $2,430, while the CoinDesk 80 (CD80) advanced 0.9%, nearly three times the 0.35% increase in the Bitcoin-heavy CoinDesk 5 (CD5). DeFi led the CoinDesk sector benchmarks with a 0.81% gain, and all six components of the DFX sector index finished higher.
The recovery came after a difficult week for U.S. technology stocks. The Nasdaq dropped 4.5%, marking its steepest weekly decline since June, as concerns about artificial intelligence spending and rising debt weighed on companies such as CoreWeave (CRWV), whose shares fell 25%.
On Monday, Nasdaq 100 futures rose more than 1%, tracking gains across Asian markets. Sentiment improved after China reported third-quarter GDP growth of 4.5%, exceeding expectations, while oil prices eased. Investors are also preparing for earnings reports from Meta Platforms (META) and Tesla (TSLA) later this week.
Derivatives positioning
Trading activity surges, but open interest barely moves. Total 24-hour crypto futures volume jumped 51% to $146 billion, while open interest increased just 1.25% to $141 billion. The gap suggests traders exchanged more contracts without substantially increasing their overall market exposure. Liquidations totaled $329 million, little changed from the previous day, while the taker long-short volume ratio remained balanced, showing no clear dominance by buyers or sellers.
Major tokens gain as leveraged positions expand. Bitcoin, Ether, Solana and XRP all advanced, with their notional open interest rising faster than their prices. This suggests fresh capital is flowing into derivatives contracts. Annualized perpetual futures funding rates were positive for all four assets, meaning traders holding long positions are paying funding fees. However, the 24-hour open-interest-adjusted cumulative volume delta (CVD) remained flat to negative, indicating aggressive selling matched or exceeded aggressive buying. That points to a rally driven largely by positioning, which could leave prices vulnerable to a reversal.
DOGE, UNI and crude oil futures see positions reduced. Open interest declined across Dogecoin, Uniswap and crude oil perpetual contracts despite largely flat-to-negative price action. The trend suggests traders are closing positions and withdrawing exposure rather than increasing bearish bets.
Cardano rebounds despite persistent bearish sentiment. ADA gained nearly 1% over 24 hours, but its annualized perpetual funding rate remained negative at -8%, the only negative reading among the major cryptocurrencies. This means short sellers are paying to maintain their positions. CVD was also negative. If ADA continues climbing, the concentration of short positions could trigger additional buying as traders close their bets.
Crypto volatility remains subdued as Wall Street’s VIX rises. Bitcoin’s and Ether’s 30-day implied volatility gauges, BVIV and EVIV, continued to signal relatively calm conditions even as the traditional market’s VIX surged on Friday. Historical VIX patterns suggest volatility could normalize on Monday.
Bitcoin put options dominate Deribit activity. The five most-traded options contracts on Deribit over the previous 24 hours were all Bitcoin puts with strike prices below the current market price. Investors commonly use these contracts to protect long positions against potential price declines, suggesting some traders are hedging their gains. Ether options activity presented a more mixed picture.
Token developments
Arbitrum gains on stablecoin incentives. ARB, the token associated with Ethereum layer-2 network Arbitrum, climbed 6.7% to around $0.20. The advance followed the Arbitrum Foundation’s Stablecoin Growth Program announcement on Thursday. The initiative allocates 2 million ARB to the first 10 teams that hold $10 million in USDG, a dollar-pegged stablecoin issued by Paxos Digital Singapore. ARB has gained 16.45% since the announcement.
Pump.fun rebounds as trading volume doubles. PUMP, the token linked to the Solana memecoin launchpad, rose 7.6%, recovering some of its weekend losses after dropping to approximately $0.0039 on Sunday. No specific catalyst was identified for the move, but 24-hour trading volume doubled to $215 million.
DeFi tokens lead the sector recovery. Uniswap (UNI) advanced 3.2% to roughly $7.42, while Lido (LDO) gained 2.5% and Ethena (ENA) rose 1.6%. The gains came as DeFi assets continued recovering from last month’s delay in the Clarity Act and declining yields.
Celestia retreats after a sharp rally. TIA fell 3.9% to approximately $0.61, giving back some gains following Friday’s 16% surge. Starknet (STRK) slipped 1% to around $0.06. According to CoinDesk data, STRK’s market capitalization has declined by roughly 25% since Friday morning.
Other major cryptocurrencies posted mostly positive results. Solana (SOL) climbed 1.6% to about $106, XRP gained 0.6%, and BNB rose 0.36%. Cardano (ADA) edged down 0.15%, while Hedera (HBAR) lost 0.83%.
The Altcoin Season Index stood at 56 out of 100, retreating from last week’s peak of 63, which marked its highest reading of 2026.
