Bitcoin is trading at $82,800, up 1.5%, but the potential MSCI delisting of Michael Saylor’s Strategy highlights two separate risks. Indonesia is dealing with a proposed market-classification downgrade, while Strategy could independently lose eligibility for certain equity indexes. The key question is whether selling pressure on listed shares could eventually spill over into Bitcoin, similar to the turmoil unfolding in Indonesia.
On October 15, 2026, MSCI launched a consultation on whether to reclassify Indonesia from an emerging market to a standalone market. The index provider cited concerns over market accessibility, ownership transparency, and regulatory enforcement. The Jakarta Composite Index dropped below IDR 5,000 after triggering a circuit breaker on Friday, before falling another 5.2% at the market open today.
MSCI has not yet removed Indonesia from its emerging-market classification. The consultation period runs until April 30, 2027, with a final decision expected by June 30. Meanwhile, certain index changes have already been frozen. Separately, MSCI has introduced rules that could affect investment-holding companies, including Strategy and Metaplanet.
The list of potentially affected companies is expected on November 11, with possible index adjustments following November 30. According to a Reuters estimate, Strategy could face approximately $2.8 billion in share outflows. For Bitcoin, the potential impact would primarily come through investor sentiment and Strategy’s ability to raise capital for future purchases.
Indonesia’s Stock Market Faces a Major Sell-Off
Indonesia’s equity market is experiencing one of its steepest declines in years, with billionaire businessman Haji Isam facing criticism over his recent acquisition of Bayan Resources (BYAN). The Jakarta Composite Index plunged 14.91% during the week ending October 16, following MSCI’s warning that it could downgrade Indonesia from an emerging market to a standalone market.
Some market observers believe the controversial Bayan transaction may have heightened foreign investors’ concerns about transparency and market integrity. The debate intensified after Bhima Yudhistira, executive director of CELIOS, connected the acquisition to MSCI’s proposed reclassification.
Bhima raised questions about the transaction’s transparency and safeguards for minority shareholders, arguing that it exposed weaknesses in Indonesia’s capital-market supervision. Bloomberg Technoz also reported that the deal may have negatively affected international investors’ perception of the Indonesian market.
Through PT Jhonlin Baratama, Haji Isam purchased approximately 30.25% of Bayan Resources from Low Tuck Kwong and Elaine Low in a deal reportedly valued at around Rp26 trillion. The financing arrangements also drew scrutiny after shares in companies associated with Haji Isam, including Jhonlin Agro Raya and Pradiksi Gunatama, were pledged to state-owned Bank Mandiri.
The controversy has emerged as MSCI raises broader concerns about opaque shareholding structures, suspected coordinated trading, and limited evidence of effective regulatory enforcement. MSCI has not publicly linked Haji Isam’s acquisition directly to its proposed reclassification, instead pointing to structural issues affecting Indonesia’s equity market.
Even so, the timing of the Bayan deal has intensified questions about whether concentrated ownership and transactions with limited transparency could weaken international investor confidence.
The situation has fueled a broader discussion about market governance in Indonesia as overseas investors reconsider their exposure to local equities. Without convincing improvements in transparency and regulatory enforcement, the country could face additional capital outflows.
Can Bitcoin Stay Strong as Strategy’s MSCI Risk Grows?
Bitcoin traded between $80,900 and $82,900 over the past 24 hours, placing the current price near the upper end of that range. Key technical levels remain in focus, with approximately $80,700 serving as nearby support and the $82,500–$82,900 zone acting as resistance. A sustained move above resistance could strengthen the short-term recovery, while a rejection followed by a break below support could revive the recent downward trend.
Although Bitcoin has gained ground during the session, one day of positive price action does not resolve the broader market uncertainty. Institutional investment flows remain an important factor, and spot Bitcoin ETF outflows provide additional insight into changes in investor demand.
Bitcoin’s rebound is encouraging, but the MSCI developments alone do not establish that Strategy-related risks will trigger immediate BTC liquidations. For now, the more direct indicator is whether Bitcoin can break through resistance and maintain its gains. Investors should assess the reported index-related risks facing Strategy and the potential share outflows alongside Bitcoin’s price movements.
Indonesia’s market turmoil demonstrates how benchmark-related decisions can quickly affect equity valuations. The reported 15% decline in Jakarta highlights the potential severity of such shocks. However, Indonesia’s proposed reclassification and Strategy’s possible exclusion from certain indexes are separate developments that operate through different mechanisms.
If index-tracking funds are forced to sell Strategy shares, the resulting supply pressure could weigh on the company’s stock price. A lower valuation could also make future equity offerings less attractive as a way to raise funds for additional Bitcoin purchases.
This represents the more plausible route through which the situation could affect the cryptocurrency market: Strategy may contribute less incremental demand for Bitcoin over time, while negative sentiment could spread to other companies holding digital assets on their balance sheets.
Bitcoin’s near-term outlook remains slightly positive following its 1.5% daily gain, but resistance is close and broader macroeconomic uncertainty persists. As expectations for gains in established cryptocurrencies become more constrained, some investors may begin exploring earlier-stage opportunities with potentially greater upside.
