Cardano Joins Solana and XRPL in Race for AI Agent Payments

Cardano has been added to the official x402 software kit, allowing developers to build applications and AI agents that can make online payments using ADA and other tokens issued on the network. However, the payment facilitator included in the release has so far only been tested on Cardano’s pre-production environment.

The x402 protocol uses the web’s existing “402 Payment Required” status to create a payment mechanism directly within an internet request. When a service requires payment, it can return the price and payment details. An application or AI agent can then authorize the transaction and receive the requested data or computing resources once the payment is verified.

The system could allow an AI agent generating a report, for example, to purchase a specific dataset on demand without requiring a user to create an account, enter credit card information or subscribe to a recurring service.

Coinbase introduced x402 in 2025 and later contributed the protocol to a Linux Foundation-backed organization. The group includes companies such as Visa, Mastercard, Stripe, Google and Amazon Web Services. Solana, XRP Ledger and several Ethereum-compatible networks already have support for the payment standard.

Cardano Builds x402 Integration

Cardano Foundation engineers began developing the integration after a specification was accepted in June. The team created the client and server components required to request payments, along with a facilitator responsible for verifying and submitting transactions.

The first release supports TypeScript, while Python support is planned for a subsequent version.

Cardano’s facilitator documentation states that a transaction was successfully completed on the network’s pre-production environment. It has not yet been deployed and tested on Cardano mainnet.

That distinction means developers can begin experimenting with and integrating Cardano into x402 applications, but the release does not demonstrate that AI agents are already making commercial payments with ADA at scale.

Cardano’s addition places it alongside Solana and XRP Ledger in the broader effort to make blockchain-based assets available for machine-to-machine payments. The competition is increasingly centered on which networks developers choose when building systems in which AI agents can independently pay for digital services.
