Bitcoin declined 0.42% since midnight UTC to $78,874, while the CoinDesk 20 index gained 0.2% and the memecoin index advanced 0.41%, helped by a rally in BNB Chain-related tokens.
Bitcoin is trading near $78,800, down 0.42% since midnight UTC and 0.75% over the past 24 hours, according to CoinDesk data. BTC remains 4.1% below last week’s $82,320 peak, which it failed to break through.
Ether has shown greater resilience, trading around $2,490 after slipping just 0.02%. Solana has also remained relatively stable, falling 0.06% to $103.77.
Among the 100 assets tracked by the CoinDesk 100, 42 were trading lower. BNB and several connected tokens were notable exceptions. BNB climbed 2% since midnight to $754, while tokens such as CAKE and SYRUP also gained as bullish sentiment returned to parts of the BNB Chain ecosystem.
The CoinDesk 5 Index fell 0.47% on Tuesday, while the broader CoinDesk 20 advanced 0.2%. The CoinDesk Memecoin Index performed even better, rising 0.41%.
Derivatives positioning
Taker activity remains bearish amid macro pressure: The taker buy-sell ratio in crypto futures continued to signal bearish sentiment as major tokens faced pressure from higher oil prices, speculation about a Federal Reserve rate hike and elevated Treasury yields. Takers are traders who remove liquidity from an exchange order book by executing trades at available market prices.
Open interest steady as volume increases 5%: Total 24-hour open interest remained broadly unchanged at around $141 billion, while trading volume increased 5% to $149.85 billion. The combination suggests greater market churn rather than strong conviction, with traders shifting capital without significantly increasing leverage.
Aerodrome Finance’s AERO leads top-100 gainers with 17% surge: AERO, the native token of decentralized exchange Aerodrome Finance, jumped 17% over 24 hours, making it the strongest performer among the top 100 cryptocurrencies by market capitalization. Futures open interest also climbed sharply to a record 129 million AERO tokens, suggesting that new long positions are supporting the spot-market rally.
Positive CVD adds strength to AERO’s bullish setup: AERO’s momentum is further supported by a positive 24-hour open-interest-adjusted cumulative volume delta (CVD). This indicates that buyers are showing greater aggression by executing market orders rather than relying on passive limit orders.
INJ shows a similar bullish futures pattern: Injective’s INJ token gained 10% and displayed a futures setup similar to AERO. The combination strengthens the case for its move above $6, a level that has acted as a supply zone since mid-June and previously limited further gains.
Bitcoin futures open interest rises in some markets: Overall open interest remained below 700,000 BTC, indicating that leverage activity is still relatively subdued. However, open interest across major USDT- and USD-margined futures rose to 265,000 BTC from 257,000 BTC as Bitcoin declined from $80,000 to around $78,700. That increase could indicate that some traders have opened short positions in anticipation of additional downside.
Bearish pressure dominates most major tokens: Sellers are generally controlling price action across many major cryptocurrencies, reflected in their negative 24-hour cumulative volume deltas. AVAX, XLM and DOGE were notable exceptions, recording positive CVD readings.
Volatility measures remain subdued: Bitcoin and Ether volatility indexes are hovering close to recent lows, indicating that traders have not yet rushed to purchase options or increase hedging activity.
Deribit options point to near-term bullish sentiment: Weekly BTC and ETH call options accounted for the largest share of 24-hour trading volume on Deribit. The activity indicates that some traders maintain short-term bullish expectations despite the wider bearish trend in taker flows.
Token talk
PancakeSwap’s CAKE was among the strongest performers in the CoinDesk 100, rising 4.9% since midnight UTC and 7.5% over the past 24 hours. The move extends a rally that began late last week, driven by capital rotation into BNB Chain assets and the exchange’s push into tokenized stocks.
VeChain’s VET climbed 8% on the day and 9% over 24 hours, while SYRUP followed closely behind. The gains placed three DeFi and enterprise-focused tokens among the market’s strongest performers as larger cryptocurrencies weakened.
Raydium’s RAY suffered the steepest decline, dropping 5.5% since midnight UTC. The Solana-based decentralized exchange token largely mirrored SOL’s own weakness.
Kaspa’s KAS fell 4.7%, giving back much of its weekend rally that had made it one of Monday’s biggest 24-hour gainers. Bittensor’s TAO followed a similar trajectory, slipping 1.5% to $256 and extending its 24-hour decline to 3.7% after leading the broader market on Sunday.
Aerodrome Finance’s AERO remained the strongest performer over 24 hours, gaining 18% to 64 cents, although its momentum has eased, with the token up 2.8% since midnight UTC.
Jupiter’s JUP dropped another 3.8% to $0.24, marking a second consecutive sharp decline after Monday’s 9% slide, with no clear catalyst immediately apparent.
