Binance Expands Into Precious Metals With Gold and Silver Options as Commodity Demand Surges

Here is a paraphrased version:

The crypto exchange introduces commodity options after seeing strong demand for gold and silver perpetual contracts.

Need proof that traditional financial assets are gaining traction among crypto traders?

Look at Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange by trading volume. After billions of dollars flowed through gold and silver perpetual futures, the platform announced on Wednesday that it is launching options contracts for the same commodities.

The new options are being introduced through Nest Exchange Limited, Binance’s exchange regulated by the Abu Dhabi Global Market (ADGM). The launch follows the strong performance of Binance’s gold and silver perpetual futures, which have been available on the platform since January.

“We have witnessed significant interest in our commodity perpetual products since their launch earlier this year, and commodity options are a natural extension of that growth. With gold reaching record levels and investors looking for inflation protection beyond traditional stocks, Binance’s commodity options give users more compliant, crypto-focused ways to diversify while staying within the platform,” Shunyet Jan, Binance’s head of exchange and trading, said via email.

Options are financial derivatives that allow traders to manage exposure to price swings. A call option gives traders the opportunity to benefit from an asset’s upside with a limited upfront cost, while a put option acts as protection against potential declines.

Derivative markets generally expand in stages. Exchanges usually begin with futures contracts to establish liquidity, strong trading activity, and narrow spreads before introducing options, which are typically more advanced and profitable products.

Binance said trading activity in its gold and silver perpetual futures highlights the growing appetite for commodity exposure. According to the exchange, gold perpetuals reached a record daily trading volume of $7.77 billion, while silver perpetuals peaked at $7.27 billion. At those highs, the volumes accounted for around 3%–8% of COMEX gold trading activity and 9%–20% of COMEX silver volumes.

“The rise in trading volume shows that when access to traditional market assets becomes easier and more connected, user participation can increase rapidly. Liquidity can develop much faster than expected,” a Binance spokesperson said.

The newly launched options are European-style contracts settled in USDT. Their prices are based on a weighted average derived from multiple independent third-party market data providers covering traditional gold and silver markets. Binance said this method creates a reliable benchmark that is not dependent on a single exchange or digital asset.

Retail trading limits

Retail users will be able to purchase gold and silver call and put options but will not be allowed to sell options, Binance said. In other words, traders can take bullish or bearish positions by buying options but cannot act as option sellers, a practice known as writing options.

For retail participants, this structure limits potential losses to the initial premium paid and avoids the liquidation risks associated with short option positions.

Selling options is often used as a way to generate additional income by collecting premiums in exchange for taking on market risk. However, the strategy can be highly risky, requires significant capital and risk tolerance, and may lead to substantial losses during extreme market moves. Because of these risks, Binance will restrict options writing for gold and silver contracts to approved market makers.

Binance is also launching educational content and standard risk disclosures as required under its ADGM regulatory framework. The exchange said it intends to introduce options for additional assets in the future and is considering allowing limited retail options writing under stricter controls.
