The U.S. conducted an overnight military operation in Venezuela, capturing President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, and removing them from the country.
Former President Donald Trump confirmed early Saturday that the strike was “large scale” and successfully detained Maduro and Flores.
U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi later announced that both had been indicted in the Southern District of New York on multiple drug trafficking and weapons charges.
Crypto markets reacted briefly to the developments. Bitcoin (BTC) fell about 0.5% to $89,300 around 2 a.m. ET but recovered to just under $90,000 by 9 a.m. ET.
Trump is scheduled to hold a news conference at 11 a.m. ET to provide further details.
