Base Hosts Launch of Aubrai, a DeSci Project Aiming to Solve Science Funding Bottlenecks

Aubrai Launches on Base, Bringing Decentralized AI to Longevity Science

Aubrai, a decentralized AI agent trained on unpublished research from longevity pioneer Aubrey de Grey’s lab, has officially launched on the Base blockchain via Bio Protocol’s Launchpad, marking a major intersection of decentralized science (DeSci), artificial intelligence, and crypto innovation.

Developed by VitaDAO and Bio Protocol in collaboration with de Grey’s LEV Foundation, Aubrai leverages blockchain infrastructure and AI to fund biomedical experiments, generate research hypotheses, and tokenize discoveries as onchain intellectual property.

Tokenizing Scientific Breakthroughs

At the heart of the project is the AUBRAI token, which gives holders governance over research funding decisions and a share of revenues from commercialized outputs. It aims to shift research funding away from philanthropy and risk-averse capital markets by turning scientific progress into investable assets.

“Traditional models create a bottleneck between lab discoveries and clinical application,” said de Grey. “Decentralized systems like Aubrai allow long-horizon research to thrive by aligning incentives and spreading risk.”

AI Meets Exclusive Longevity Data

Powered by de Grey’s unpublished lab results, Aubrai identifies novel hypotheses in longevity science, proposes experiments, and routes them to token holders for approval and funding. Once validated, findings are minted as IP tokens, enabling revenue-sharing through licensing deals with biotech or pharmaceutical companies.

The system is already supporting RMR2, a large-scale mouse rejuvenation study. Aubrai has reportedly helped streamline planning and flagged critical issues earlier than traditional review methods.

A Turning Point in Scientific Funding

For Bio Protocol founder Paul Kohlhaas, Aubrai represents a shift in how research is conducted and monetized. “Just as Substack empowered independent writers, Bio’s infrastructure enables scientists to operate beyond legacy systems,” he said.

Challenges Ahead

Despite its promise, tokenized science faces regulatory hurdles and skepticism from traditional pharma. Still, for longevity research — where innovations often stall due to lack of funding — Aubrai offers a compelling alternative.

If successful, the platform could be a blueprint for how blockchain, AI, and decentralized governance can reshape the future of scientific discovery.
