Metaplanet Adds 780 BTC, Cements Position as Largest Bitcoin Holder Outside U.S.
Japanese investment firm Metaplanet (TSE: 3350) has deepened its commitment to Bitcoin, acquiring an additional 780 BTC and bringing its total holdings to 17,132 BTC — the largest amount held by any publicly traded company outside the United States. The new purchase brings the firm’s holdings to an estimated value of $2 billion at current market prices.
In a filing on Monday, the Tokyo-based company said it paid an average of 17.5 million yen (approximately $118,176) per bitcoin during its latest buying round.
Metaplanet also highlighted its proprietary performance metric, BTC Yield, which measures shareholder value growth relative to dilution. Between July 1 and July 28, BTC Yield reached 22.5%. For the quarter ending June 30, the figure climbed to 129.4%, up from 95.6% the previous quarter.
Following a treasury strategy modeled on that of MicroStrategy (MSTR), Metaplanet has steadily accumulated BTC since pivoting into crypto. Its average purchase price now stands at ¥15 million (roughly $99,732) per coin.
Investors responded positively to the disclosure. Shares of Metaplanet closed 5% higher at 1,240 yen on Monday, while Japan’s benchmark Nikkei 225 index slid 1.1%.
